Harmony School of Science - Houston ranked 2nd in Houston!

We would like to recognize the dedication and hard work of its students, parents, faculty, staff, and administration.

Recently, the Children at Risk organization released its 2013 ratings. Children at Risk is an advocacy organization that was designed in 2006 to be a tool to parents, students, campuses, and districts on how each campus performs in relation to other campuses. Children at Risk rankings have proven to be instrumental in generating conversations between educators and the public on ways to improve the public education system. Eligible Elementary, Middle, and High Schools are ranked on a variety of variables as pertaining to their grade levels. The Middle School variables are the following:

STAAR Advanced Reading (10%)
STAAR Advanced Math (10%)
Attendance Rate (15%)
Retention Rate, Grade 7 (5%)
Retention Rate, Grade 8 (5%)
Percent Economically Disadvantaged (25%)
Reading Gain/Loss (15%)

Because of your determination for excellence, we have received the designation of Second Best Middle School in Houston and Fifth Best Middle School in Texas.

While the ratings are determined by multiple factors, the end result is the same: because of our teachers, because of our staff, because of our administration, because of our parents and, most of all, because of our students, Harmony School of Science – High School is one of the best schools in the state of Texas!

Thank you for your continued support and for partnering with us in your child’s education.

Dear 9th and 10th Grade Parents,

The HSS Sugar Land High College Guidance Counselor Mr. Alptekin Genc has begun Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) meetings with our current 9th and 10th grade students and parents. We are excited to share our new course selection guide with you and guide you and your student in exploring their choices and making educated decisions. Below is a brief summary of what an IGP is?

What is an Individual Graduation Plan?
It’s a road map to your future! The IGP includes information on your postsecondary goals, career cluster of choice, courses required for graduation, and electives that coordinate with your career goals.

4 Steps to follow before you schedule your IGP:

  1. Assess your strengths, weaknesses, likes, and dislikes.

  2. Review the attached course selection guide closely and make your selections.

  3. Research career opportunities to learn more about yourself and a list of careers you might want to pursue.

  4. Talk about your options with your parents and make a tentative plan with graduation plan form before the IGP meeting to discuss with the counselor.

To schedule your appointment please contact the front office (Ms. Badema Cajic) at 281-302-6445, Ext 101 or email Ms. Cajic at bcajic@harmonytx.org.

HSS High is No Place for Hate

In order to continue to foster a welcoming and inclusive campus here at HSS High, we will be undergoing a process to designate our school as a "No Place for Hate" school.

This process invites all of our wonderful parents, students and staff to think about how we can all make a positive change against prejudice in our school, in our community, and in the world at large.

To do so, we will need the help of everyone on campus. We ask that our students and staff step up and say that they will not stand for prejudice in any form.

Throughout the school year, there will be three school-wide activities that will help create an open dialogue on bullying, stereotyping, labeling and other experiences that create divisions and fear, rather than acceptance between people from all walks of life.

Please join us in embracing this initiative, to help our students become thoughtful and well-informed 21st century citizens--ready to interact and succeed in an increasingly diverse global community. Thank you very much for your time, and thank you for helping to make our school No Place for Hate.

Four Harmony Campuses Made into the Challenge Index

Washington Post LogoWashington Post has announced its Most Challenging High Schools list of 2012. Four Harmony high schools made the Challenge Index and three of them in the top 100 out of 1900 schools in the list.

The Challenge Index of Washington Post ranks high schools since 1998 based on the student achievement on IB, AP, and college level tests (SAT, ACT, etc.) and graduation rates. The index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies (Subs. lunch) and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E). A (P) next to the school's name denotes a private school.

Letter to Key Stakeholders Regarding The New York Times Article

Soner TarimFrom Superintendent Dr. Soner Tarim To the Harmony Public Schools Community: A disappointing article on charter schools in this week's New York Times attempts to put Harmony Public Schools in Texas in a context that is not accurate, necessitating this brief response. Many of us at Harmony Schools cooperated extensively with the Times on this story over the last several months, providing documents, interviews, tours and dozens of detailed responses to specific questions in good faith. But, as sometimes happens, the end result was not entirely what we had hoped.
