NASA Progrom for High School Juniors

HAS is a NASA unique opportunity for students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Selected students will begin their journey with the HAS Online Experience that will start in November and conclude in April. During this time, students will create technical writings and drawings, solve math problems, participate in discussion forums and chat sessions with NASA engineers and scientists. Texas teachers serve as our HAS reviewers who grade the students’ work. In April, students who successfully complete the HAS Online Experience will be qualified to be selected to attend the HAS Onsite Experience hosted by Johnson Space Center (JSC). Selected students will spend six days learning first hand from NASA engineers and scientists who not only speak to the group, but also serve as mentors for the teams. This program is sponsored by NASA and funded by the State of Texas, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and Rotary NASA, at no cost to participants.

Don't Forget to Pay Lunch Balances

HSS High is a small school with limited resources and needs your support to provide a quality education. You can help us by making sure your child’s lunch account has enough funds at all times. Please take a moment to check your child's database account to make sure there are adequate funds.

Beginning the week of September 22nd, any student that has an unpaid balance exceeding $10.00 will not be served a regular school lunch until payment has been made. We do not want any student to go hungry while at school, so if you have not paid the amount owed by this time, we will provide your child a granola bar or cheese sandwich and milk. Unpaid balances will also result in the suspension of your child’s online account until payment has been received.

Payments can easily be made by signing into your child’s database account, then clicking the “Other” tab on the far right of the top menu. Payments are also accepted through credit cards, checks, and money orders in the front office during normal operating hours. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the front office at 281-302-6445.

Seniors -- time to get your senior portraits taken!

If you want your senior photo in the yearbook, you must have your picture taken at Prestige Portraits BEFORE December 1, 2014. Female students must take a drape photo, while male students must wear the tuxedo for their yearbook photos (both provided by studio). Sessions scheduled after December 1 will not be eligible for the yearbook because of our deadlines.

It's easy - call Prestige Portraits to schedule your portrait session, show up and smile, and they provide us with the photos! Session fees range from $20-$50, and ordering the portraits are up to you.

Please contact the studio (http://www.prestigeportraits.com/sugarlandtx.html) or HSS yearbook adviser Holly Hale (hhale@harmonytx.org) if you have any questions.

Lets get this show on the road!

A hot day, some willing faculty members, excited students and five buckets of ice. What do they have in common? An Ice Bucket Challenge, of course.

On Thursday, September 11, 2014, about 25 members of the HSS High faculty took the challenge. Some students dumped ice from the second floor balcony onto the heads of anxious teachers, administrators, and staff members below while others watched, laughed, and took photos and video.

The result? Wet and chilled faculty, and funds for the ALS Foundation. And a good time was had by all. HSS Sugar Land High challenges HSA West and SST San Antonio to the ALS Challenge.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Overall goal of home visiting is to help strengthen relationships between parents and faculty. Home visiting programs are an effective way for us to get parents involved in their child's education and to let parents and children know how much they care. However, home visits are only the beginning. HSS embraces the idea of parents as partners and actively involves parents in their children’s education. Please schedule a home visit from the link below.

Debate Competition

Last weekend, HSS Debate competed in a Texas Forensic League debate competition at Foster High School alongside 48 other area high schools. This was our first tournament of the year, and we are proud to return with several victories.

In extemporaneous speaking, Eric, Hanna, Astrid, Jazzib, and Alexandria advanced to semi finals. Yazan also advanced to semi finals, in championship extemporaneous speaking.

Shaheer, Mayra, Brianna, and Ebun advanced to finals, with Brianna taking 1st overall, Shaheer taking 3rd, Ebun taking 4th, and Mayra taking 5th. Harmony swept the finals, pushing out almost all other schools from this event.

Our individual members would not have been so successful without the help of the entire debate team, which has been working tirelessly since the first day of school (several students worked over the summer) collecting evidence and working collectively on speech format. This is truly a win for all of us.

We are grateful to Mrs. Hale, who worked heavily with the team last year, and to the administrators and staff who have supported and encouraged us.

We are looking forward to continuing our success at our next competition in September. Details for this competition will be released soon, and our students are already preparing.
