Debate Competition

Last weekend, HSS Debate competed in a Texas Forensic League debate competition at Foster High School alongside 48 other area high schools. This was our first tournament of the year, and we are proud to return with several victories.

In extemporaneous speaking, Eric Ramirez, Hanna, Astrid Gonzalez, Jazzib Akhtar, and Alexandria Vidales advanced to semi finals. Yazan Aldarm also advanced to semi finals, in championship extemporaneous speaking.

Shaheer Raza, Mayra Castillo, Brianna Hutchison, and Ebun Ayannusi advanced to finals, with Brianna taking 1st overall, Shaheer taking 3rd, Ebun taking 4th, and Mayra taking 5th. Harmony swept the finals, pushing out almost all other schools from this event.

Our individual members would not have been so successful without the help of the entire debate team, which has been working tirelessly since the first day of school (several students worked over the summer) collecting evidence and working collectively on speech format. This is truly a win for all of us.

We are grateful to Mrs. Hale, who worked heavily with the team last year, and to the administrators and staff who have supported and encouraged us.

We are looking forward to continuing our success at our next competition in September. Details for this competition will be released soon, and our students are already preparing.

Gifted and Talented (GT) Parent Night

Dear Parents,
Amazingly, the 2014-15 school year has started already, and things are moving fast! On the evening of Thursday, September 4th, HSS High will host a PBL Information Night from 5:30 to 6:30 PM in the West cafeteria. During this event, the science department will present basic information on PBL projects required of both middle and high school students. Specifically, we will discuss Harmony’s new science fair procedures, as well as how your child can acquire assistance on his/her project (and apply for competitions in the Spring).

We would also like to extend a special invitation to the parents of our gifted and talented (G/T) students, as we are encouraging all high school G/T students to complete a “Level III” PBL. In addition, we will be discussing other enrichment opportunities for G/T students, including classroom pull-outs, special field trips, mentoring, clubs, competitions, and internet resources.

We look forward to seeing you on September 4th. Thank you for your continued support and for valuing your child’s quality education.

Accountability Ratings–HSS-High earns 6 distinctions

Texas Education Agency has recently announced the Accountability Ratings for Texas Public Schools and Districts for 2013-2014.

Under the new state accountability system, campuses in Texas that achieve the rating of Met Standard were also able to earn distinction designations in seven areas.

And HSS High met standard and earned six out of six eligible distinctions. There were only 26 districts in the state of Texas that received a distinction designation for postsecondary readiness and HSS Houston was one of them!

Congratulations to all students and teachers for their efforts and thank you parents for your continuous support!
